sympathy at home

After the funeral you come home. We got the two days of mail and felt supported by the notes of sympathy from work and church and Sunday school and the flowers.

the grave

A funeral ends at the grave. Then you fellowship with food. This was Wednesday.

good-bye Gary

Gary Shaar's funeral was held at the Hope United Methodist Church in Ephrata, Pa., today, at 10 a.m. We got the bouquet of flowers given by the whole family at Central Market. Arrived at the church in plenty of time for the 9 a.m. viewing. The interment followed at Sinking Spring. There my sister Anna Lois (l), brother Milton, and Evie, my sister the new widow, contemplate the cemetery tent.

funereal detour

Out of the blue, Dorcas' sister, Rachel Yoder, died suddenly, on Ascension Day. Rachel and Monroe lived in New York. On their way to Grantsville, Maryland, she took sick and died in a Harrisburg hospital.

On Wednesday the funeral was held at the Maple Glen Mennonite Church, Grantsville, and the burial was in this cemetery beside the church.

For over forty years their church was Seventh Avenue Mennonite Church. A good two dozen members and friends of that neighborhood and church and others from the Bronx attended.

rhubard source

Here's the rhubarb au naturel .

My mother planted this--25 years ago would be a total guess but the best I could do to guess when.

Intriguing that the leaves are toxic. I learned from my neighbor to pull the stem you want and it disconnects from the roots. I used to cut them.

Today I made rhubarb punch to take to the funeral.

Cousins are for funerals

What are cousins for, I asked just a few days ago?

I found out one reason sooner than anyone expected. My cousin Ernie Stoltzfus died this week. His funeral was today in York, Pa. I went with Milton. Those are Milton's hands. To the right is Richard Sensenig, the oldest of the 45 Lehman cousins. He is 74 and Ernie, not quite the youngest, was to be 47 in less than a year.

Cousins are for funerals, was the implied answer to the question. Just one of the reasons. But they do pull together.

Ernie just died because of a heart defect no one had ever known. It was touching to see the grief of a wife and son and other close family so rudely shocked.
