down by the old Mill Stream

My high school alma mater festooned the 1890-built bridge across the Mill Stream, which meanders through the center of the campus, with a fabric display of performance art.  A big sign advertising the kick-off of a new $35 million capital campaign kind of spoiled it.  Can we do beauty just for the sake of beauty?  Because humans do beauty?  You can google "bridges wrapped in fabric" to see other examples.  But I'm proud of what my artist classmate, Emmet Murphy, did this evening.

bridge out

Monterey Road, which connects with Newport on the East end of downtown, is out while a narrow span from horse and buggy days is replaced. Miller Lane is the last exit. The plywood form for one of the abutments is built. The stream feeds into the Mill Stream west of here.

more bridge

Here's more about the bridge: a toll of 25 cents was charged the year it opened; it cost $2.5 million to build in 1929-30. "Today the bridge is still considered the world’s longest concrete multiple-arch bridge," says wikipedia. Behind it is the Wright's Ferry Bridge opened in 1972.

home from beach

Dorcas drove the Jetta most of the way home. Here's the Del. route 1 bridge over the canal--a suspension bridge in the center. I picture a huge tyrannosaurus rex playing harp music while nibbling on cars.
