Wrightsville escape

For a short afternoon escape we drove to Wrightsville, York County, Pa., yesterday, especially enjoying views from the west bank of the Susquehanna River, behind this restaurant.  In the past week the ground has popped into green.  We also hiked up to Chickies Rock without the camera.

get away to zip 17565

Milton and I struck out for the territories on a two-hour, mid-winter vacation. Destination was a township-built underpass by-pass near Marticville contested by the Commonwealth. The by-pass crosses over the old railroad right-of-way which is becoming a public trail with a new electric transmission line. From there we drove a few miles to Pequea where the road ends at the Susquehanna River. Pequea has a post office.

more bridge

Here's more about the bridge: a toll of 25 cents was charged the year it opened; it cost $2.5 million to build in 1929-30. "Today the bridge is still considered the world’s longest concrete multiple-arch bridge," says wikipedia. Behind it is the Wright's Ferry Bridge opened in 1972.

river not high

Although weather reports warned of flooding, I did not see a high Susquehanna River when I drove there today. I did see a rainbow over a side street and railroad crossing in Columbia, Pa. Milton ran inteference on the run to and across the Columbia-Wrightsville bridge built for old Route 30 (Lincoln Highway) in 1930.
