scribbles from the past

It might not qualify as hieroglyphics, but for my money, finding this date scratched in concrete 60 years ago motivated me to photograph it.  January, 1955.  I was in 5th grade.  My father was 45 years old.  We were celebrating the dedication of a new "indoor" outhouse with a real window and double walls and a septic tank style disposal area.  I found this date when we tidied up the shop a week ago.  I had seen it over the years.  As most of his peers, my father exited school after the 8th grade.  So he never "majored" in anything. Yet I knew him as attentive to history and having a kind of reverence for dating things, especially concrete he poured around our house as property improvements.  So, with Father's Day coming up:  thanks, Dad (Lester Lehman, 1910-1981).

Cupboard raids can yield treasures, too. Dorcas found the creamer and sugar bowl with lid on Good Friday.

No cracks, no hidden defects. Showing some use on the gold trim. She acquired this set when the girls home in Long Island was closing down. Let me guess about 1978. They were left behind and she rescued them.

We used them in the era when grandparents, Ivan and Della, Lester and Elva, visited our home at 542 East Orange. Mikasa Rosetta, if you like names. Give them to re-uzit?

I put them on e-bay kind of for the fun of it and to keep in practice. It's been a year and a half since I put something on e-bay.

third and fourth generations

Eighteen family members crowded into the Monterey house Sunday, December 23. Of the family of Lester and Elva, that's the whole bunch, except Mel and Patrick.

Late in the afternoon, the entire and third and fourth generations were there and the shop light gave this image of them. Standing: Bonnie, Chris, Joel, Stephanie, Sarah, Ryan; front, Helen, Manny, Angela, and lights girl Emily.

Wow. Great bunch! If Lester and Elva could see them now!
